Doc Mercana - Architect of Bubble Warp Transport

Doc is a broken man. Once Aurora’s renowned science-genius, he became the fall guy for Space Academy’s science division, wrongly blamed for an explosion in their research laboratory that was not his fault.

In the aftermath, his warnings were ignored, his work dismissed, and his reputation dismantled. Branded a quack and mockingly nicknamed “Dr. Bubbles” for his radical ideas on Bubble Warp Transport, Doc was ridiculed and sidelined by the very institution he helped define.

But he was right.

Due to his peaceful nature, Doc refused to work for any private military power outside Space Academy. Rather than weaponise his discoveries, he chose exile — a decision that cost him his standing, his support, and the continuation of his life’s work.

That life’s work was built on a radical understanding of the universe itself:

“My life’s work has been ‘Bubble Warp Transport’ and the idea of the paradoxical interconnectivity of all space and time. Our universe is not linear ... it is lots of interconnected bubbles, with their own portal entry points ... and we just need to utilise them!”

Doc understood that travel was not about crossing distance, but about accessing structure — the hidden pathways already woven into the fabric of the universe.

“If u want to access the tapestry ... the very fabric of the universe ... You go to where the stitching of the universe can be found!”

Those stitching points are not abstract.

“Exactly. In science terms ... Black Holes are ... the very weavers of the Universe!”

By harnessing the unique energy emitted by Black Holes, Doc’s Bubble Transport Pods could tap into this deeper structure — allowing instantaneous travel across vast distances, and unlocking what he described as effectively “infinite energy.”

“The way it works is that Black Holes emit massive amounts of a certain specific quality of energy ... and my technology can capture and channel this energy ... connecting with the very fabric of the universe...”

The implications of this discovery extend far beyond travel. In peaceful hands, it offers a solution to the Energy Crisis. In the wrong hands, it becomes something far more dangerous.

This is where Doc’s downfall becomes the universe’s problem.

Research funding cuts at Space Academy forced him into an impossible position, attempting to prove his theories using inadequate alternative energy sources rather than the Black Hole energy he insisted was essential. The resulting lab explosion destroyed his reputation. The system failed — and blamed him.

Now everything is about to change as he finally has a chance at redemption.

Unfortunately for him — and for the universe — that chance comes when the Zorgons steal his top secret Bubble Warp Transport Technology. In their hands, it becomes a system capable of extending their dominion across the cosmos and threatening the stability of the universe itself.

The true mind behind this theft is the Zorgon scientist Armegon — a cold, calculating genius who recognised the real potential of Mercana’s work long before anyone else. Where others saw eccentric theory, Armegon saw control. He studied Mercana, understood the scale of the invention, and persuaded Commander Gloch to steal the technology — not simply to use it, but to dominate the universe through it.

This transforms Doc’s life’s work into the central prize of the conflict.

It also defines their opposition: creator and corrupter. One seeking to understand the universe, the other seeking to exploit it.

This becomes the catalyst that drives the series, bringing Doc to Ursula and Brook’s ship and forming the Super Squad as we know it — a group of misfits bound together by failure, redemption, and the consequences of a discovery too powerful to ignore.

As his backstory unfolds, Doc must reacquaint himself with teamwork and basic human connection, often leading to awkward and unexpectedly humorous moments. His brilliance remains unquestionable, but his humanity — fractured, eccentric, and deeply sincere — defines him just as much as his science.

Doc Mercana is not simply the scientist of the story, but the architect of its central technology — the source of its portal mythology, and the creator of a system powerful enough to save worlds or destroy them.

He is a broken man, a mocked visionary, and the only one who truly understands what has been unleashed.

He saw the stitching of the universe.

And he was right.
